1. ACSim (Sweatbox) released
Over the past several years, virtual traffic volume has grown tremendously. However it is still very scattered, random and unreliable. To practice ATC efficiently there is no replacement for controlling under the critique of a knowledgeable mentor or instructor, so the members of VATSIM's Boston ARTCC suggested a program to simulate traffic. To implement that idea Chris Serio has come up with the ACSim, also known as the “Sweatbox”.

The ACSim (short for AirCraft Simulator) is a program that connects to a stand-alone VATSIM server and allows an instructor to set up any number of IFR and/or VFR aircraft, which he can control by typing instructions into the program while he also takes the role of the “voice” of the pilots. The student connects to the same server using the usual VATSIM controller software (e.g. ASRC or VRC) and controls the “simulated simulated aircraft” in scenarios presented by the instructor.

With the introduction of the ACSim, instructors and mentors can train or test their students at any time that is convenient: No longer will we have to wait for a busy night to gain adequate experience or carry out over-the-shoulder check-outs. In addition, students will learn to handle large volumes of traffic with much more efficiency because it develops the most important skills of a constant scan of all aircraft in a controller's sector, planning ahead and learning to get the "big picture." ACSim has been extensively tested in VATUSA, and has been a valuable addition to their training program.

VATSIM will be bringing the ACSim server online in March 2006, and ACSim will be made available to regional, divisional and subdivisional staff to implement in local training programs as they consider appropriate. Members will be informed of local arrangements by their divisional staff and instructors.

2. Advanced Voice Server implemented
VATSIM is pleased to announce the implementation of the Advanced Voice Server. AVS is a program which replaces the Roger Wilco Base Station, which hosts the radio channels through which pilots and Air Traffic Controllers communicate.

AVS provides improved stability and reliability for voice transmissions, and is the next step in establishing stable, robust voice servers for use on the VATSIM network. Controllers and pilots will set their radios/voice rooms in exactly the same way as before. The use of voice has been integrated into both pilot and controller software, eliminating the need to run separate voice programs. AVS has been developed by Ben Supnik, who also wrote XsquawkBox (which enables X-plane users to connect to VATSIM).

VATSIM, the Virtual Air Traffic Simulation Network, is delighted to announce the launch of the Virtual Radar Client. VRC has been created by Ross Carlson, a VATSIM Instructor, as an alternative radar client for VATSIM members, primarily for use on systems with multiple monitors.

VRC's main design goal has been to keep the primary radar scope as uncluttered as possible by keeping all secondary functions, such as chat windows and flight strips, in floating windows intended to be positioned on a side monitor. A "profile" system allows the user to save different configurations which can be loaded as required.

VRC has been designed primarily for ease of use in the simulated radar environment on VATSIM. The introduction of VRC gives virtual controllers a greater choice of how they organize and interact with their "scopes".

Further information and the VRC software can be found at http://www.metacraft.com/VRC

Dear VATSIM Member,

Recently, VATSIM formed a new team of controllers called "The Hit Squad" whose job would be to help accelerate the growth of younger ACCs on our network by providing extra training for controllers and staffing for pilots interested in coming to these areas.

We are pleased to announce that the first ACC that we have been working, India, is now ready for your visits and support. Pilots are invited to visit http://india.vatsim.info where they can find all the charts they need to fly to this exciting new area, and where they will find a team of controllers waiting to handle them.

We are busy training new controllers to work this airspace as well. People from this part of the world, or with connections to this part of the world are especially welcome to join our training programme - if you are interested in controlling in India, please send an e-mail to chief@india.vatsim.info, explaining your current qualifications (if any) and the reason why you want to control in India.

As you all know, the growth of new ACCs depends on your support, and for our new trainees to succeed in creating a viable, permanent presesnce on VATSIM, they need pilots to fly to their airports, and for controllers to staff their scopes. We hope we can count on all of you to help make a success of
India, and all of our future projects.

Sincerely,
J. Clark, on behalf of the VATSIM Hit Squad
